Advertisers can track the number of times the ad was clicked leading the consumer to the company’s website. Advertisers also track conversions such as leads generated, and sales.

Targeting capabilities allow users to deliver advertising to customers that fit the exact profile they are looking for. My question is, “Just how sophisticated IS banner advertising in general. I mean, what types of demographic information is being gathered in order to target whichever preferred group they are aiming towards? How is that information gathered and by whom?
Banner advertising is very sophisticated. You can target based on actual site and audience. Above that a lot of demographic information is gathered voluntarily and as people search and read articles. That data can be used to target a very specific customer online with banner ads. That is just some small examples of how it can be done.
Banner advertising not only allows for specific targeting but it ads scale. Even with detailed targeting the audience is still massive. Typically much larger than search.
